Ruette, Macé ( fl 1598-1644 )
A Parisian bookbinder and bookseller who succeeded
Clovis Eve as royal binder to Louis XIII in the
early part of the 17th century. Ruette was at one
time given credit for the invention of MARBLING , but as
that art is known to have come to Europe by way of
the Near East, his part may have been to introduce
it into Parisian bookbinding. He and his son,
Antoine, who was royal binder to Louis XIV,
produced many bindings tooled in the "au
pointillé," i.e., the POINTILLé
style. (94 , 100 , 140 )
