Roxburghe style
A particular style of quarter binding
characterized by plain flat spines covered with
brown and green calfskin, no raised bands, and
dark red cloth or paper sides. The lettering,
which is in gilt, is near the head within a
border. Only the head r edge was gilt and the
other edges were rough cut. The style was
originally designed for the publications of the
Roxburghe Club, founded in England in 1812 by a
group of wealthy bibliophiles, and named in honor
of John Kerr, Duke of Roxburghe. (69 , 94 )
