Richenback, Johann ( fl 1467-1485 )

A German bookbinder and chaplain of the church at Geislingen (Wurtemberg). Richenback generally included his name and address on his bindings, as well as the name of the person for whom the book was bound. Some 40 or more of his bindings have been authenticated, most of which are covered in white pigskin, a favorite leather of the early German binders. The use of coloring on many of his bindings gives them a bright appearance, making them stand out from the blind-tooled calf and pigskin bindings of his time. He was using rolls, as well as stamps. as early as the 1460s, and had a font of 7 of the former and some 49 of the latter. (94 , 339 , 347 )
