Originally, a hard-calendered paper board used as a support for the leather covering of carriages, and produced from rags and waste paper in thicknesses of approximately 0.125 inch. Today the term refers to a general type of binder's board used for mounting prints, art works, matting, etc., or as the hoards for fine bindings.
