pyrogallol
A crystalline, toxic phenol (C 6 H
6 O 3 ), having weak acidic
properties, prepared by heating gallic acid with
water. It is readily soluble in water, alcohol,
and ether. Alkaline solutions rapidly absorb
oxygen from the atmosphere, becoming dark brown in
color. Pyrogallol is used in photography, as well
as in the manufacture of dyes and in dyeing
processes. (175 ,
