punching machine
A machine used to produce holes in paper. It
consists of a flat plate on which the pile to be
punched is placed, an arm which carries the hollow
punches, and lay guides to which the sheets are
fed, so that the holes are punched in the same
positions throughout. The punches, which are
generally positioned about 1/8 to 1/4 inch from
the back edge of the sheets, descend and punch the
holes. The discs of waste paper produced are left
in the hollow center of the punches and eventually
clear through their open tops. The punching
machine has been largely superseded by the paper
drilling machine. (179 , 189 )
