puering
A process now included with BATING . Formerly, it
consisted of the treatment of unhaired skins with
solutions of fermented dog dung in a heated
infusion, the purpose being to effect the removal
of certain undesirable constituents and to further
prepare the skins for tanning. Puering was a
faster and more powerful method than bating
because of the greater strength of the puering
liquor, but for this very reason it was also
potentially more dangerous. (363 )
