primary colors

The three chromatic colors—red, yellow, and blue—from which all other hues, tones, and shades may theoretically be obtained by mixing, sometimes with the addition of black and white. To obtain another color, however, it is necessary to use secondary and intermediate colors, e.g., green and violet, as well as red, yellow, and blue pigments of various shades to obtain many hues because pigment is not pure color.
