practice block
A device on which to practice lettering and
decoration of the spine of a book. It consists of
a block of wood, the edge of which is rounded to
simulate the curved spine of a book. This edge is
covered with leather that has been pasted over a
strip of board the width of the spine. The board
gives a resiliency and response to the pressure of
the finishing tool similar to that of the spine of
a book. (130 )
