practice block

A device on which to practice lettering and decoration of the spine of a book. It consists of a block of wood, the edge of which is rounded to simulate the curved spine of a book. This edge is covered with leather that has been pasted over a strip of board the width of the spine. The board gives a resiliency and response to the pressure of the finishing tool similar to that of the spine of a book. (130 )
