plate mark ( plate line )
An impressed line denoting the boundary of a plate
used in making an engraving. It is caused by the
pressure applied to make the impression on the
sheet. The part of the paper on which pressure was
applied is depressed and smoother than the
surrounding area. Occasionally faint traces of ink
can be seen along the plate line if the plate was
not properly cleaned before printing. (156 )
