plate attachment
The method used to attach a plate to a leaf or
section of a book. The various methods include: 1)
an illustration printed on a separate sheet and
pasted to a narrow guard of paper or linen which
is then folded around the section and sewn with it
(plate guarded and hooked); 2) a plate secured by
folding the margin of the edge of the leaf on
which it is printed around the section and sewing
it with the section (plate hooked on own guard);
3) plates printed to form a section of two or more
leaves and inserted into or folded around a
section and sewn with it (plates folded in or
around sections); and 4) two plates joined
together by means of a strip of paper or linen,
thus forming a section which is inserted into or
folded around a section and sewn with it (plates
guarded and joined). (82 , 343 )
