plasticizer
1. A material, such as glycerin (glycerol),
sorbitol, triethylene glycol, etc., incorporated
into an adhesive during manufacture to increase
its flexibility, workability, or distensibility.
The addition of the plasticizer may cause a
reduction in melt viscosity, lower the temperature
of the second-order transition, or lower the
elastic modulus of the solidified adhesive. 2. A
material added to the stock in the manufacture of
a paper such as glassine, or used in the
papermaking mixtures, to impart softness and
flexibility. Usual papermaking plasticizers
include glycerol, sorbitol, invert sugar, phthalic
acid esters, various minerals oils, organic esters
of phosphoric acid, and the like. (17 , 235 , 309 )
