plain binding
A style of binding executed in Colonial America
and characterized by the use of sheepskin and
calfskin decorated sparsely in blind. This austere
and rugged "style" of binding certainly accounted
for the largest number of books bound in Colonial
America. A limited number of plain vellum and half
sheep bindings with leather corners and marbled
paper sides were also produced. (115 , 200 )
