1. The process of punching round or slotted holes
in paper, either during printing or as a separate
operation, so that one portion of the sheet may be
detached from another, e.g., checks from a
checkbook. 2. The process of punching holes,
generally arranged in the form of a letter or
letters, symbol, etc., in one or more leaves of a
publication, for the purpose of identifying the
