peeling

1. A form of leather decay characterized by peeling off of the grain surface. Peeling seems to be particularly associated with those leathers tanned with the condensed class of vegetable tannins, although at this time the cause or causes of the defect are unknown. 2. A defect in paper in which the surface scales or peels off.
