palm leaf book

A manuscript book, produced in India, Burma, and contiguous areas, consisting of strips cut from the leaves of the palmyra. or talipot palm (Corypha umbraculifera). Each strip is about 16 to 36 inches in length, and about 1 1/2 to 3 inches in width. The leaves were first inscribed with a stylus, the incisions then being filled with an ink prepared from charcoal and oil. The strips were then gathered, pierced through the middle, secured with cord or twine, and attached to a board. (156 , 225 )
