palm leaf book
A manuscript book, produced in India, Burma, and
contiguous areas, consisting of strips cut from
the leaves of the palmyra. or talipot palm
(Corypha umbraculifera). Each strip is about 16 to
36 inches in length, and about 1 1/2 to 3 inches
in width. The leaves were first inscribed with a
stylus, the incisions then being filled with an
ink prepared from charcoal and oil. The strips
were then gathered, pierced through the middle,
secured with cord or twine, and attached to a
board. (156 , 225 )
