neutral sulfite process
A paper pulping process that dates back to at
least 1880, when a method was developed for using
an alkaline solution of sulfite in iron digesters.
The process employs sodium sulfite with sufficient
alkali added, to neutralize the acids developed
during the cooking process. The alkali may be
caustic soda, soda ash, or sodium bicarbonate. (17 , 324 )
