nap side

The soft, fibrous surface of a leather or cloth, as opposed to the smoother reverse side, i.e., the grain side of a leather. The term is usually applied to velvet cloth and ooze or suede leathers to indicate the face of the material. Normally, the side opposite the grain side of a leather is termed the "flesh side."
