modern monastic

A style of bookbinding which characteristically employed very thick boards, red, brown, or gilt edges, and unusually high raised bands. The usual leather used was divinity calf, as well as brown or red morocco. The design was blocked in blind, or tooled in blind with rolls, fillets and stamps. It consisted of a center pattern featuring heavy lines and solid figures within a rectangle, which, in turn, was within an elaborately embossed rectangle surrounded by a mitered border. Modern monastic was very popular in the middle of the 19th century. (241 )
