maleic anhydride

A colorless crystalline substance (C 4 H 3 O 2 ), soluble in acetone and chloroform. It is manufactured by the oxidation of benzene by air at 400 to 450° C. over a vanadium catalyst. Maleic anhydride is used in the manufacture of paper. See: FORTIFIED SIZE .
