Longepierre, Hilaire Bernard de Requeleyne, Baron de ( 1679-1721 )
A book collector who had his books elaborately
hound and embellished with the Golden Fleece, in
commemoration, it is said, of the success of one
of his dramas. This device, which formed the sole
decoration of his bindings, was usually located in
the center and at the corner of the covers, as
well as in the panels on the spine. The books were
bound in morocco, the edges were marbled under
gilt, and some of the volumes had finely tooled
doublures decorated with the same motif as the
covers. The superior craftsmanship of these
bindings has prompted some authorities to
conjecture that they were bound by Luc Antoinne
Boyet. (94 , 347 )
