A method of sewing the sections of a book on tapes that stemmed originally from the relaxation of the (high) standards set for craft bookbinding, in which a book was always sewn on raised bands (See:FLEXIBLE SEWING ), and had a TIGHT BACK .

The need for both economy and the HOLLOW BACK , which caused the open book to lie flatter, led to the introduction of sewing on (four) tapes, which was the basic sewing for library books for many years. Today, however, and especially in the United States, OVERSEWING is more nearly synonymous with library sewing. See also: TAPE SEWING .
