laying-away
The process of tanning hides and skins in layer
vats over a long period of time in order to assure
a full tannage. The hides or skins are dusted with
finely ground raw vegetable tanning materials to
provide additional tanning material. Laying-away,
which was practiced in situations where only weak
tan liquors were available, has been little used
since the introduction of concentrated tan
liquors. (363 )
