javelle water
A dilute bleaching solution prepared either from
sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) or potassium
hypochlorite (KOCl), the former being the stronger
of the two. It was at one time widely used for
bleaching purposes, but its use in the bleaching
of archival papers has been superseded by the use
of milder agents, such as calcium hypochlorite
(CaOCl). (197 )
