Jansenist style
Originally, a French style of book decoration of
the late 17th and early 18th centuries, named
after the followers of Cornelius Jansen
(1585-1638), the Bishop of Ypres, who advocated
personal holiness and austerity. The books were
embellished only by a centerpiece (often armorial)
and corner fleurons, or by elaborate doublures
tooled with dentelle borders but with no
decoration at all on the spine and covers. (69 , 172 )
