hemp
A tall Asiatic herb, Cannabis sativa, which yields
a tough bast fiber when retted. Hemp fibers are
difficult to distinguish from linen by ordinary
examination, but their presence may be suspected
in a fibrillated paper. Hemp is used mainly for
thin, opaque papers of great strength; however, it
is almost never used alone. The term "hemp" has
also come to be used in a generic sense as fiber
and is then preceded by an adjective, e.g., Manila
hemp (See: ABACA
), Seisal hemp (See: SISAL ), etc. Hemp is
also fairly widely employed for the cords used in
sewing books. (17 ,
