gypsum

The naturally occurring hydrous form of calcium sulfate (Ca 2 SO 4 . 2H 2 O), which is used as a filler for printing papers, and serves to fill the spaces between the paper fibers, thereby increasing opacity and smoothness. It is also used in the manufacture of GOLD LEAF . Also called puritan filler" and "terra alba." See also: BRIME .
