guide boards

A technique employed by some bookbinders when trimming with the plow, in which two binder's boards, each about 1/2 inch larger than the leaves of the book, are tipped on, one to the front endpaper with its top even with the trimming line at the head of the text block, and the second tipped to the back endpaper with the edge even with the trimming line at the tail. Guide boards are used to control the squareness of the book in the lying press and to prevent crushing of the shoulders of the text block when the press is closed on it. (196 )
