An edge marble produced by spreading a finely
ground vegetable coloring matter mixed with
spirits of wine (a solution of 90% ethyl alcohol
in water). The alcohol causes the coloring matter
to spread in a diversity of forms, which are then
transferred to the edges of the book. (241 )
