coating
The mineral substances used to cover the surface
of a paper or cloth for the purposes of creating a
new surface having certain desirable properties.
This property in paper is usually that of
printability, but may also be for purposes of
decoration. In cloth it is usually used to
increase strength and water resistance, but its
decorative effect may actually sometimes be of
greater importance. The coating material fills the
interstices of the cloth or the minute "hills and
valleys" which are present in the surface of even
highly calendered paper. (143 , 323 )
