clearing
The process of lightening the color and removing
metallic stains from the grain surface of newly
tanned leather. Clearing is done by drumming the
leather in a cold solution of weak acid, e.g.,
a.25 or 1% solution of oxalic (H 2 C
2 O 4 ) or sulfuric (H
2 SO 4 ) acid; if heavy STRIPPING (1) or
clearing is required, or if the original tannage
was not satisfactory for the leather required, it
is not uncommon to retan the leather at this time.
