clay tablets
The earliest form of the "book." Clay tablets were
generally used for records and were inscribed in
cuneiform writing on wet clay, which when hardened
was usually protected by a cover (outer shell),
also of clay, which was inscribed with a copy,
abstract, or title of the contents. (12 , 156 )
