carbon tetrachloride

A colorless, mobile, nonflammable, liquid (CCl 4 ), used as a solvent and grease remover, and as a fumigant for books. It is both toxic and volatile. It also gives off chlorine, which, in the presence of glowing charcoal, e.g., a lighted cigarette, becomes phosgene, which is even more toxic.
