Cambridge calf ( Cambridge sheep )
A method of decorating a calf- or sheepskin
binding by sprinkling on two tints, leaving a
rectangular "pane" (panel) in the center of each
cover. This technique was used extensively from
the 1670s and again during the early decades of
the 18th century. It was revived and used to a
considerable extent during the second half of the
19th century. (371 )
