Brazil wood
The heavy wood of any of the tropical trees,
family Leguminosae, which yield a red,
water-soluble dye, brazilin (C 16 H
14 O 5 ) which at one time
was used to produced coloring materials used both
in marbling and in dyeing leather. Brazil wood
dyes have been largely superceded by the synthetic
dyestuffs.
