alum water
ALUM dissolved in
water and used to sponge paper and the edges of
books before laying on the marbling colors. The
alum acts as a binding medium, attracting and
securing the ox-gall and colors to the paper. It
also acts as a mordant and is also useful in
counteracting excessive gall. (161 , 264 , 335 )
