3. THE SAMPLING FRAME

IMS solicited lists of museums from numerous sources. The lists it obtained included all entries in the 1992 American Association of Museums Official Museum Directory, all entities listed in IMS's own data files as having applied to any IMS program since 1984, and 63 other lists from museum-related associations. IMS merged the records from these lists into a single sampling frame. IMS did not include in the sampling frame any list entry that it determined from inspection of the entry to be an individual, a part of the U.S. Government, a for-profit organization, or otherwise not within the definition of a museum, as described in Section. IMS also did not include in the sampling frame any entry from a list that it determined to refer to the same organization as an entry already included in the sampling frame. IMS removed some entries from the sampling frame due to its determination, based on information in the Official Museum Directory, that they were not within the definition of a museum. The resulting sampling frame consisted of 11,654 records.
