GET READY FOR HURRICANE SEASON WITH HERITAGE PRESERVATIONS RESOURCES FOR PREPAREDNESS
Simple Preparedness steps reap big rewards
June begins the Atlantic hurricane season, but flood, fire, and earthquake seasons are year-round. Take action to make your institution more prepared throughout the year. Small steps can make a big difference.
The newly reorganized Heritage Emergency National Task Force Web site (http://www.heritagepreservation.org/programs/TASKFER.HTM) has a variety of information and resources to aid cultural institutions before, during, and after a disaster:
- Working with Emergency Responders: Tips for Cultural Institutions: a poster that provides ideas for how to establish crucial relationships with local emergency responders.
- Dealing with Water Damage: a free streaming video demonstrating practical tips on safety, salvage priorities, and equipment.
- The award-winning Field Guide to Emergency Response and Emergency Response and Salvage Wheel provide clear advice on dealing with disasters that affect cultural resources. A DVD accompanies the Field Guide and forms are available to download.
- Listen to presentations from Alliance for Response on establishing local cooperative networks and finding funding for disaster projects.
- Guide to Navigating FEMA and SBA Disaster Aid for Cultural Institutions simplifies the process of applying for FEMA and SBA assistance after major disasters. All necessary forms are included.
If you are affected by a major disaster, visit the Information on Major Disasters Web Page for essential resources, including a form on which to submit damage or status reports.

The Society of American Archivists (SAA) created the MayDay initiative in 2006 and promoted the idea to its members and allied organizations. In 2007, the Heritage Emergency National Task Force, with SAAs help, expanded the concept to include all kinds of collecting institutions and historic preservation interests.
