Texas

Texas is the largest of the 48 mainland United States and has a population of over 20 million. There are 1,339 outdoor sculptures in the state, with 222 of them in Dallas alone.

Before Texas became a state in 1845, it was an independent republic with its own constitution for almost 10 years. General Sam Houston, famous for defeating the Mexicans at the battle of San Jacinto in 1836, served twice as president before the Republic was annexed to the United States.

By the end of the 19th century, Texas was famous for its cowboys and cattle trails (the Chisholm Trail originated there), and in the 20th century it became famous for its oil wells.
