SOS! volunteers documented and photographed 416 outdoor sculptures in Maine. Of that number, 145 were determined to need treatment. Maine is known as the Pine Tree State and has over 2,500 lakes, 5,000 streams, and 26 state parks. Lumber has long been Maine's dominant industry due to the abundance of trees and access to rivers for transportation. The first sawmill in America was built on the Piscataqua River in 1623.
