Bangor
Hannibal Hamlin, Carl Eugene Tefft, 1927
This sculpture commemorates one of Maine's most famous politicians. Hannibal Hamlin
(1809-1891) served in the Maine legislature, was briefly Maine's governor, was both a
congressman and a senator, served as Abraham Lincoln's first Vice President, and finally
was appointed ambassador to Spain. He died in Bangor on July 4, 1891. Local citizens
raised funds for the $13,000 memorial. Mr. Hamlin's cane has been stolen twice.
