Hawaii

45 volunteers from the Aloha state documented and photographed 128 outdoor sculptures. Volunteers represented the Big Island, Oahu, Maui, and Kauai. 68 sculptures were reported in Honolulu alone. Among the sculptures surveyed were three statues of King Kamehameha all made from the same cast by Thomas Ridgeway Gould. The original, which was once lost in a shipwreck, is one of two located on the Big Island. The most recognizable version of the statue is located in front of the Aliiolani Hale in Honolulu. Other sculptures dedicated to Hawaii's royalty include a statue of King David Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani. Contemporary artist Marisol created a memorial to Father Damien, the priest who ministered to a leper colony on Molokai for 16 years before succumbing to the disease himself.
