Georgia
153 Georgia "Peaches," including sixth grade students from Elbert County Middle School, documented 751 outdoor sculptures. In La Grange, a cast of the Marquis de Lafayette stands on a granite base in the center of a fountain. Lafayette became a general in George Washington's army at age 19 and played a vital role in the Battle of Yorktown, which ended the American Revolution. La Grange was named after Lafayette's home, the Chateau de La Grange, after the general commented on how much the Georgia countryside reminded him of his home in France.
In Woodruff Park in Atlanta, you can see Atlanta Rising from the Ashes by Gamba Quirino. The piece depicts a woman being lifted from flames by a phoenix in flight. A phoenix is a bird from Egyptian mythology. The sculpture is allegorical in nature, symbolizing Atlanta's rebirth after a devastating fire during the Civil War.
