Julian Hoke Harris' sculptural group Critters shows three characters from the Uncle Remus stories-Brer Bear, Brer Fox, and Brer Rabbit, who is with the Tar Baby. Joel Chandler Harris, an ancestor of the artist, created the character of Uncle Remus, the old former slave, who spun tales of the Old South. Harris, who was white, based the character of Remus on several of the slaves he had known growing up in Georgia. For his stories, he drew on African-American folklore and helped preserve the history and voices of the pre-Civil War South. The sculptures stand at the front entrance of the Morgan County Library.
