Portland

The Story Garden (Larry Kirkland, 1993) in Waterfront Park is unlike most sculptures because the artist here has created an environment, one in which he invites you to walk, read, even play. The piece was made especially for children, but can certainly be enjoyed by anyone. It is about life's journey: over 150 granite stones are etched with stories, riddles, and questions, like "What is your joy?" The four main entrances to the maze are marked by a granite gateway, a tortoise, a hare, and a massive throne.
