Paterson
Alexander Hamilton, Franklin Simmons, 1905
Who is Alexander Hamilton? Do you know when he lived? What clues does this sculpture give
about this American? Look at his clothes. The wig, vest, ruffled shirt, knee breeches, and
shoes with a large buckle are typical of wealthy men of the 18th century.
As you may remember from history class, Alexander Hamilton was a military leader during the American Revolution, a member of the Continental Congress, a delegate of the Philadelphia convention where the United States Constitution was written, and later became the first Secretary of the Treasury.
