Fort Benton

The statue commemorates the famous expedition of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who blazed a trail from Missouri to the Pacific Ocean in 1804-06. The Lewis and Clark Memorial also features the Shoshone Indian Sacajawea, who led the expedition, and her child Pomp. Lewis is looking through a telescope up the Marias River toward the Rocky Mountains to determine the best route to the Pacific. Check out another sculpture of Lewis and Clark in neighboring Idaho.
