The National Gallery of Australia (NGA) is one of Australia’s
major institutions and holds an extensive textile collection. The
upcoming significant exhibitions in Asian textiles and theatre costumes will
provide a varied and exciting opportunity to conserve these collections.
Previous exhibitions include Sari to Sarong and From Russia with Love.
The NGA level 5 positions would be active members of a small
focused team preparing works for exhibition and loan including treatments,
research and analysis, preparation for display, packing for loan and storage.
Requirements for positions
- Tertiary qualifications in
materials conservation specialising in textiles and at least 2 years
experience in the field.
- A good knowledge of materials
and methods used in the manufacture of a wide range of textiles and
costumes.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the
methods of technical and scientific examination and conservation treatment
of textiles.
- Successful applicants for these
positions will be required to demonstrate the ability to liaise across a wide
range of Gallery staff and the public on all aspects of conservation, with
well developed interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to
work as a positive team member.
