Rare 1881 CARRIAGE TRIMMERS’ MANUAL PUBLISHED BY ASTRAGAL PRESS

Mendham, NJ  June 15 , 2007

The Astragal Press, an independent publishing company located in Mendham, NJ, announces the reprint edition of

The Carriage Trimmers' Manual: Guide Book and Illustrated Technical Dictionary.  Originally written in 1881 by a veteran of the carriage industry, it was the most comprehensive addition to trade literature at the time of its publication. Rare, hard-to-find and long out of circulation, it is now back in print to inspire a new generation of carriage enthusiasts.

Of special interest to curators and carriage collectors, this in-depth and practical book is an invaluable resource that provides descriptive text and illustrations of numerous carriage interiors.  It also describes the complexity of materials and range of skills required for this artistic branch of the carriage trade.

For conservators, restorers and dealers in antique furniture, this is an indispensable guideline and instructive manual for the upholstery trade in general.  Tool collectors will benefit from the descriptions and illustrations of trimmers' tools such as stuffing sticks, round knives and shears.

The book’s forward is written by Merri Ferrell, former Curator of the Carriage Collections at the Long Island Museum of American Art, History & Carriages, Stony Brook, New York and the Maymont Foundation, Richmond, Virginia.  She is also the co-author of 19th Century American Carriages: Their Manufacture, Ownership and Use and has published extensively on the history and preservation of horse-drawn vehicles.

The Astragal Press, was founded over 20 years ago by Emil & Martyl Pollak.  Tool collectors themselves, their company evolved when they could not find any books devoted to the subject of antique tool identification.  Encouraged to share the knowledge they had meticulously collected, the Pollaks made the decision to self-publish their research efforts and debuted with their first book, A Guide to American Wooden Planes and Their Makers, a groundbreaking work in the field of tool identification and historiography.  Since then, the company’s book list has grown to over 100 Astragal titles.  In 1996, Martyl and Emil Pollak received the Early American Industries Association's prestigious J.D. Hatch Award for scholarly excellence in writing related to the field of early American industries.

The company publishes new works as well as reprints of out-of-print classics, and has developed into one of the principal resources for those interested in areas such as antique tool collecting, metalworking, carriage building, early sciences and early trades.
