Beeswax works quite well and often recommended by manufacturers. However, depending on beeswax content, one would have to be careful in conservation /preservation work. But I imagine you experts know this.

Isn't graphite the standard fix for metal zippers? I'm sure I learned
that somewhere. If you don't have a graphite stick, run a pencil lead
over the offending mechanism, inside and out.  (a dry soap bar might help too)
